Before 1949, he lived in Shanghai where he had studied at St. John's College. The college was run by the Episcopal Church and classes were in English. In 1949 he travelled to Taiwan to visit his brother. So he was already in Taiwan when the communist tightened their control over the mainland and the exodus to Taiwan began. He took a "temporary" job teaching until the situation on the mainland stabilized.
