It was my pleasure to escort Mr. Doo at the Alumni reception and concert at TAS. He's been retired
since 1976 and lives in southeast Taipei in a condo complex located in a recently developed area.
The complex is east of Hsin Yi Road in an area which used to be farm country along the road to Chilung (Keelung).
We had a chance to discuss how he came to Taiwan.
Before 1949, he lived in Shanghai where he had studied at St. John's College. The college was run by the Episcopal Church and classes were in English. In 1949 he travelled to Taiwan to visit his brother. So he was already in Taiwan when the communist tightened their control over the mainland and the exodus to Taiwan began. He took a "temporary" job teaching until the situation on the mainland stabilized. Since then he has never been back. His parents stayed on the mainland and did not flee, so he never saw them again. |
