Navigating a sea of opportunities - 17. Januar 2020
boot Düsseldorf had the honour to host the Economist Event Sea Tourism Summit.
Maritime tourism has always been an important part of the tourism industry and a growth factor for many coastal states. Certain aspects of globalisation, such as the liberalisation of transport and communications, the digital revolution and the growing interest in international travel, have favoured the sector. This has led to new, innovative services and new infrastructure.
Challenges & opportunities
On the other hand, the aftermath of the last global recession, fears of a new downturn, tight national budgets and an ageing population have raised new challenges. "In times of environmental crisis, the issue of sustainability is crucial; raising environmental awareness is not only a necessity but also an opportunity" explained Matteo Renzi, Italian Senator and former Prime Minister of Italy, at the summit.
On January 17th 2020, one day before the official opening of boot Düsseldorf, the Economist Event entitled "Sea Tourism Summit: Navigating a sea of opportunities" took place in the Stadthalle of the Congress Center in Düsseldorf. High-ranking executives from politics and society as well as renowned representatives of the EU and international institutions took part in this stimulating dialogue.
