For boot 2020, Düsseldorf native Benno Lindel of "Sandcity" is building an underwater world of around 60 tonnes of sand in collaboration with two of the best European sand carvers at Travel World in Hall 13. To do this, the sand is first compacted by compressing it by almost a third of its volume. Then, during "carving", the actual sculpture is cut from the highly compacted block. In this way, an underwater world of sand is created before the eyes of visitors within nine days. Trade fair visitors have the opportunity to experience live how the sculpture is carved manually, bit by bit.
Sandcastle Workshops
In addition to the work of the professionals, trade fair visitors are invited to get creative themselves. Anique, one of the artists present, helps with the construction of a sand castle or sand house. Thus, parallel to the creation of the underwater world, visitors to boot 2020 have the opportunity to create their own sand sculptures in daily workshops at 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm.
Sand sculptures of Sandcity
World champion of sandcastle building
The artist group "Sandcity" around Benno Lindel is internationally staffed with about 30 sand carvers. Since 1998 the "Sandcity" team has been creating sand sculptures in shopping galleries, shopping malls, at city marketing events, company presentations, trade fairs and congresses as well as in museums. In 2008 and 2009 "Sandcity" staged the first World Championships of sand sculptures in Germany. In 2017, the group of artists broke the world record of 16.68 metres for the "highest sand castle" and was thus entered in the "Guinness Book of Records". In the last 20 years, "Sandcity" has created around 200 sand sculptures. The team around Benno Lindel is therefore one of the most experienced and renowned in sand sculpture construction worldwide.
