From the County Capital Schwerin to the Hanse city of Wismar
The quite demanding canoe tour along the Wallensteingraben from Schwerin to Wismar is about 18 kilometers long and should best be undertaken when water levels are high and preferably in a plastic canoe as there are quite a few obstacles on the way. A direct entrance from the Outer Lake Schwerin into the Wallensteingraben has not been possible now for a couple of years since a weir was built under the railway bridge that can not be overcome.
Primeval wetlands The best access point is the road bridge across the river between Bad Kleinen and Hohen Viecheln. After about one kilometer through unspoiled wetlands and meadows you reach Lake Lostener, which you have to cross. At the other side of the lake you have to carry your canoe around another weir.
Just so much to see Past Moidentin (weir) and Petersdorf (weir) you reach the village of Mecklenburg after about 5 km. The newly built cascading flood reliefs may be navigated when water levels are sufficient. It might also be a good place for a break or even a visit to the museum of agricultural history.
There are further weirs once you passed Dorf Mecklenburg and Metelsdorf and then you cross below the M 20 and the B 106. Before entering the Wismar Mill Pond there is a final weir to pass. The end of the Mill Pond is a good exit point for your canoe just below the road bridge of the B 105. Parking is also possible here.
