With September upon us, it's starting to feel like autumn again and what could be nicer than enjoying the golden fall landscape from on the water – naturally with good food on board? In this issue of our "Kitchen below decks" series we focus on grilling on deck. Professional chef Moritz Freudenthal, whom many people already know from the live cooking events at boot Düsseldorf, is renowned for his delicious fish recipes. This time, together with the German Angling Association, he has conjured up a perfect autumn recipe for a relaxed barbecue meal.

Mobile cooking: from the pantry to the grill

Cooking on a boat is practically an art, because the space on board is usually quite limited. This also applies to the galley, the culinary heart of a boat. Storage and refrigeration facilities are also often minimal. That makes prep and planning absolutely essential, especially on longer trips.

In order to create variety, this time it's "Kitchen below decks" ON deck. Because nowadays you don't have to limit yourself to the galley kitchen – you can also resort to other types of cooking, for example barbecuing. Special grills that are designed for the conditions on a boat, for example from Lotusgrill and Cobb, are a perfect solution.

Barbecuing on board: What do you have to bear in mind?

The most important criteria for an on-board grill are: It must be light and easy to clean as well as versatile – on some models you can even bake pizza. In addition, an on-board barbecue should use minimal gas and be stable even with the typical rolling motion of a boat. But the general rule is: A barbecue has no place below decks!

Important note: In many ports barbecues are prohibited on the jetties and on board. Please inform yourself in advance, look for special barbecue areas or use the grill only at anchor!
