Wingfoiling: Fly over the water on your board

The combination of compact gear and low wind requirements in a sport that captures the spirit of the time. But wingsurfing isn’t new: even back the 1980s surfers could be spotted using a hand-held sail in the shape of a wing, without a mast or boom. But conventional surfboards were too heavy to gain real speed with these wings. It was only in combination with hydrofoils, which take off even at low speeds, that the trend picked up more quickly. From 29 July to 1 August 2021, the Foil Festival, the first German championships in the disciplines of surf freestyle and surf racing, will take place at Schöneberger Strand in Holstein.

 “We’ve been observing the scene for some time now and have watched the interest growing every year. “Wingfoiling simply deserves its own event,” says Torsten Schulze from Freiluft GmbH. “I look forward to meeting the players of this young sport and will enjoy working with them to develop wingfoiling and build up the wingfoiling community.”

The organiser also sees a lot of potential for the coming years: “I believe wingfoiling will grow comparably to windsurfing back in the 1970s and 80s. It’s just a lot of fun and is equally suitable for your local quarry pond or the waves of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. And it’s still fun even in low wind, when the windsurfers and kitesurfers have long since packed up.”

The Foil Festival is not only about fascinating jumps, exciting races and spectacular wave rides. Spectators can also try out the latest wingfoil equipment for free directly from the manufacturers on site.
