New Zealand at the forefront of on-water innovation

Demand for electric hydrofoiling technology is accelerating worldwide, and New Zealand is increasingly recognised as a centre of excellence in this emerging segment. At the heart of this development is Auckland-based marine technology company Vessev, whose electric hydrofoiling vessels are being adopted by tourism operators worldwide.

By late 2026, two Vessev-built vessels will be operating premium tourism experiences, while another VS–9 is scheduled for delivery to a luxury eco resort in Northern Ireland, highlighting the growing global appetite for this New Zealand-designed technology.

Lake Taupō to host a world-leading freshwater experience

Lake Taupō is set to become one of the few destinations globally to offer a freshwater electric hydrofoiling tourism experience. James Kells and Laurel Kells, owners and operators of Taupō Water Sports, have announced the launch of Taupō Hydrofoil Tours.

The new venture will transport visitors to iconic lake locations aboard a Vessev VS–9 electric hydrofoiling catamaran, positioning Taupō as a distinctive destination for visitors seeking innovative and sustainable experiences.

A new drawcard for domestic and international visitors

James Kells, Chief Executive Officer of Taupō Hydrofoil Tours, said the introduction of electric hydrofoiling would add a compelling new dimension to the region’s tourism offering.

“As operators, we’ve always been committed to offering new experiences on Lake Taupō. Electric hydrofoiling on the VS–9 will allow visitors to appreciate the lake’s unique spirit in a new way. At the same time, the vessel’s zero-emissions, low-wake technology honours the environment that makes this region so special.”

The launch comes as Taupō continues to attract international attention, having been named one of CNN’s must-visit destinations for 2025.

The VS–9 and New Zealand’s leadership in hydrofoiling

The VS–9 is Vessev’s flagship nine-metre electric hydrofoiling catamaran, designed to lift above the water on carbon fibre foils. This configuration delivers smooth, stable and near-silent journeys, while producing minimal wake and no on-board emissions.

Design, performance and sustainability credentials

Among the few electric hydrofoiling vessels operating in commercial service globally, the VS–9 has received international recognition for its immersive, passenger-focused design. Wraparound glazing, clean lines and minimalist interiors allow guests to remain connected to the surrounding environment throughout the journey.

With a cruising speed of 25 knots and a range of up to 50 nautical miles, the VS–9 consumes approximately 90% less energy than a comparable conventional vessel, supporting both operational efficiency and sustainability goals.

Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond

The VS–9 destined for Taupō Hydrofoil Tours is scheduled to arrive on Lake Taupō in spring 2026. Its introduction is expected to further enhance the destination’s profile as a benchmark for innovative, low-impact tourism experiences.

As interest grows from global tourism and luxury hospitality operators, electric hydrofoiling tourism continues to reinforce New Zealand’s reputation as a testing ground for sustainable innovation and premium visitor experiences on the water.
