Prestigious award for marine conservation -- boot Düsseldorf

At boot Düsseldorf 2020, the "ocean tribute" Award will be presented jointly by the Prince Albert II Foundation, the German Marine Foundation and boot Düsseldorf for the third time to projects in the field of marine conservation. The application deadline is July 31st, 2019.

Thanks to the commitment of the Monegasque Foundation and boot Düsseldorf, the prize money has been increased to 20.000 Euros. All institutions, associations, research institutions and projects working for the protection of oceans and waters are eligible.

Who can apply?

Candidates should meet three criteria: The first is effectiveness, which is about the potential to achieve a sustainable improvement in the cleanliness of bodies of water. Secondly, the project should involve as many people as possible. Finally, the project should be well connected in order to achieve the highest possible public impact. Those who fulfil these requirements should register and apply as soon as possible on the website of the "ocean tribute" Award.

Goals and objectives

"With the competition for the "ocean tribute" Award, boot Düsseldorf has taken the right approach. For many years, we have been supporting projects and activists who are committed to protecting the seas. The awarding of a prize was only the logical continuation of our work. After all, with our partners from Monaco and the German Marine Foundation we have competent advisors and experts on board", explains boot Düsseldorf director Petros Michelidakis and adds: "In doing so, we have made the United Nations sustainability target our guiding principle: The goal is to preserve the oceans and use the seas and marine resources sustainably".

We are looking for ideas!

The "ocean tribute" Award is thus aimed at projects working on the development of innovative, future-oriented technologies to protect and conserve the oceans. The award is intended to support projects

for the promotion and dissemination of scientific knowledge and the development of research capacities;

reducing the pollution of the seas with waste and nutrients in order to achieve clean oceans in the long term;

developing sustainable management methods to protect marine and coastal ecosystems and actions to restore fish stocks;

effectively furthering public awareness, drawing attention to shortcomings and offering solutions for the sustainable management of our waters;

promoting activities to reduce ocean acidification and its impact.

boot Düsseldorf - an active partner in marine conservation

boot Düsseldorf has been supporting international projects and activities for marine conservation for many years and has a prominent and successful ambassador by the name of British sailor and marine activist Emily Penn. Since 2017, the "love your ocean" area at boot Düsseldorf, which was set up jointly with the German Marine Foundation, has also been presenting measures and ideas for marine conservation, guidance on the quality of water and inviting kids to join in marine research. The "ocean tribute" Award was launched in 2017 and presented for the first time at boot Düsseldorf 2018. The first winners were the Greenboats and The Ocean Foundation initiatives and the logistics company Fairtransport.

The Jury

The award is presented in three separate categories: Society, Industry and Science. Individuals as well as organisations and institutions can enter their water conservation projects to the award. The projects will be evaluated by a high-profile jury: Monika Breuch-Moritz (meteorologist, Director of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, BSH), S.E. Bernard Fautrier (Minister & former Ambassador, Vice President of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation), Prof. em. Dr. Hartmut Graßl (climate researcher, board member of the Association of German Scientists, retired director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology), Prof. em. Dr. Michael Orbach (anthropologist and leading US consultant for maritime policies, Duke University), Robert Marx (President of the German Marine Industries Federation BVWW e.V. and of boot Düsseldorf) as well as Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Board of Management, representing Messe Düsseldorf.
