Diving is more than sport and hobby, diving is a way of life
For our boat-duesseldorf.com blogger Bettina Winert, diving is more than just a watersport - it's a way of life. Find out about what makes diving a unique lifestyle...
Diving is not just another pastime. Diving, for me, is a way of life. Through diving I have seen the world, made friends for life, and, as a result of these experiences, I simply go about my daily life a lot more relaxed.
Take it easy - every single day
For me diving just means absolute relaxation. Only when I concentrate fully on myself, my breathing and my environment, I can fully enjoy my dive. With calm and even strokes of my fins I advance further and further into the depths of blue water, I float lightly through the sea like a feather and I am completely relaxed, all the stress and anxiety falls off me. I take this feeling of complete relaxation with me into my everyday life. In stressful situations I often think back to my dives, I notice how I automatically become calmer, more relaxed, more focused. It is almost like a kind of meditative training on land and helps me to relax briefly in the hectic daily routine.
Many of the most spectacular diving spots on our planet are in great, exotic destinations. My diving trips have taken me to places like the Maldives, Indonesia and Egypt. Some places like Sudan I would probably never have visited without diving. I have seen how beautiful and diverse our planet is. I met people from all over the world and broadened my horizons. I have always been able to think outside the box and have learned a lot about life in other parts of the world. Therefore the experiences on land at these locations are as important to me as the dives themselves.
The many encounters with different people during my diving trips has led me to make friends for life all over the world. When you dive together for a few days or weeks, you get to know each other quite quickly. You also share a hobby, a passion. That makes it easy to connect. I have already visited many of these holiday acquaintances at home or have arranged to go diving together again. A good friend showed me his hometown Jakarta, I would never have gotten these intense, local impressions as a normal tourist. Knowing these many different people from different cultures is an enrichment to my life.
Short Weekend Breakaways
When I can't go away, but really long for a dive, I simply go to the next lake for diving. I pack all my diving gear, books and some food. Together with some friends I head for the water. We do one or two dives, meet new people time and again, eat together and lazily enjoy the sun. It helps me to recharge my batteries immediately and I feel almost as recovered as after a week's holiday.
