The basis of SHARKROJECT's work is that nobody considers the protection of anything they are afraid of. The organisation, which is recognised as a non-profit organisation and has been awarded the DZI donation seal, works to "decriminalize" sharks that are wrongly portrayed as bloodthirsty predators, with the intention to lay the foundations for their better protection.

An estimated 100 to 150 million sharks are killed every year, either as by-catch or specifically as fin, meat or cartilage suppliers. The extinction of the animals is in full swing and almost unnoticed by the general public. According to leading scientists, the disappearance of top predators will lead to extreme changes in the marine ecosystem. The ignorance of the general public about the importance of sharks in the ecosystem and the current situation of the animals does not allow a broad protection lobby to develop, as for example with whales or panda bears.

Members of the shark initiative include scientists, divers and shark friends from all over the world. Currently, the organisation has an international network of embassies and alliances and is by far one of the world's leading and most active shark protection organisation. The basis for this are a multitude of publications, documentations, broad educational work and successful national and international shark protection campaigns. Also well-known actors like Hannes Jaenicke, himself an enthusiastic diver and SHARKPROJECT Shark Guardian, have already campaigned live at the boot Düsseldorf for the protection of sharks and the project in general

Sharkproject "Blind Dates" - the world's first interactive shark book

The world's first interactive book on shark accidents and encounters by authors Gerhard Wegner and Christine Gstöttner was presented at boot Düsseldorf in 2014. In this book, the two presidents of Sharkproject Germany tell everything you always wanted to know about sharks. With the know-how of 25 international shark experts, their experience from over 35,000 shark encounters and the interactive design with 46 films and animations, the book can answer many questions.
