Which boats are suitable for driving without a driving licence? Basically any boat that can still be navigated safely with a 15 hp engine. But there is a rule of thumb: "The limit is one ton per five hp engine power", says Jürgen Tracht, Managing Director of the German Watersports Industry Association.
Lighter boats are therefore better suited for engines of up to 15 hp - especially inflatables, but also small boats with a GRP hull. For inflatable boats up to 4 m in length and smaller cabin boats, 15 HP of propulsion power is absolutely sufficient for comfortable cruising, inflatable boats can even glide with it.
15-horsepower outboard engines are therefore sufficient not only for day trips, but also for longer cruises. Once you've entered boating, you won't be able to resist the fascination and perhaps still decide to get your driving licence and switch to a larger boat, after all.
Inflatables & RIBs up to 15 hp
A combination of inflatable boat and 15-hp outboard motor can be easily transported by car and offers maximum flexibility. The range of such boats is huge. 15-horsepower outboard engines offer a sporty entry and are not only suitable for day trips, but also for water hiking. Inflatable boats with 15-horsepower outboards even start to glide.
Rigid Hull Boats up to 15 hp
The easiest entry into rigid hull motorboating are boats made of aluminium. These watercrafts are particularly popular with anglers because of their robustness. More sporty, on the other hand, are the solid GRP-hull boats, which usually also offer a little more comfort than the functional fishing boats. Both types of boats are usually easy to trailer and have little draught. In this class, a 15 hp engine is quite sufficient for sporty driving on the water.
Cabin Boats up to 15 hp
In the case of small, light cabin boats, 15 hp propulsion power is sufficient for comfortable cruising - not only day trips, but even overnight cruises are possible. Thanks to their size, the cabin boats offer considerably more storage space so that you can be on the water for several days at a time. The cabins also offer protection in poorer weather conditions, which means that the boat can be used more frequently, as one is not necessarily dependent on absolutely dry weather.
