For a first course you will get the canoe equipment from the club or rental company. As a rule, you can choose whether you want to start your first paddling attempts in a kayak with the double paddle or in a canoe with a single-bladed paddle. Everyone has to find out for himself which type of boat he likes the most.
Safe with helmet and life jacket Many canoe clubs have a number of different club owned boats that they make available to their members. In addition to the boat and paddle, the equipment includes a life jacket and, depending on the water, a helmet. Helmet and life jacket should be provided to you when you first try out paddling.
10 things that belong in a canoe
Sun block, glasses, headgear
In bad weather a rain cover
Sufficient food / non-alcoholic beverages
A map with the route and exit points
First aid kit, mosquito spray, gloves against blisters
Life jacket, helmet and a seat cushion
Watertight containers
Do not underestimate the sun on the water When the sun is shining, the intensity of the sun is often underestimated, as it seems to be pleasantly cool on the water. Protect yourself with a headgear against too much sunlight. Above all, shoes must fit firmly. Laced, sports or special paddling shoes are best.
Waterproof containers save trouble For stowing spare clothes and valuables, waterproof bins or duffel bags are recommended, which should be provided by the canoe tour organisers. Please make sure to stow electronic equipment in waterproof containers! "There is no bad weather, there is only bad clothing!" Canoeing is fun in any weather. Protect yourself in cool and humid weather with a waterproof and windproof jacket with hood.
Tested quality - for your safety If you are travelling with an organiser, look for the sign of the Bundesverband Kanu e.V. (Federal Association of Canoeists). The member companies commit themselves to certain quality criteria that make your canoeing holiday safe. In particular, these companies will provide you with life jackets free of charge, because safety must cost nothing! In any case, always wear life jackets when you are on the water and make sure that no child sits in the canoe without a life jacket.
