As a skimboard novice, you don't need any special material to gain your first experience. A simple wooden board or "Woody" in the form of a teardrop is well suited for the first attempts to start. The board size depends on the body size and especially on the weight of the rider. The more weight the rider brings, the more surface is needed to distribute the weight on the water and thus achieve the desired aquaplaning effect. The board must therefore be longer and wider for heavy riders.
The right board Especially for flatland skimboarding the boards are a bit shorter. They are more stable and have a harder "flex", are stiffer for fast direct jumping out of the water. Also the form of the boards, which is called "Shape", is very different from normal wooden boards or waveboards.
Twin Shapes After landing tricks, it often happens that the rider lands with the board "upside down". To make this landing easier and also to improve the rotation moment of the board in the air, people use so-called "twin shapes". Twin shapes are boards with a symmetrical shape, where it does not matter how the board is ridden. The nose and tail have the same shape, so there is no front and back of the board.
Where to go skimboarding? The choice of the right spot! The best place for skimboarding is a long and shallow sandy beach. It doesn't matter whether it's by the sea or a quarry pond inland. The only basic requirement is shallow water and a soft surface to minimize the risk of injury during the first attempts. The correct water depth is between a few millimeters and up to 10 cm. If the water is too deep, the aquaplaning effect will not last long and the slides will be over after a few meters because the board will sink into the water. (Benjamin Nagel)
