If you want to change direction, you can do it almost on the spot with a little trick, which is explained here in a few simple and easy steps:
Step 1
First, you have to take a small step backwards from the middle of the board to lift the bow slightly out of the water. Before turning manoeuvres you should always have a quick look over your shoulder, just like when driving a car, to make sure that nothing is in the way where you want to go. Because just like on the road, when it's full at the spot, someone may be just behind you in your blind spot.
Step 2
The further the bow is lifted out of the water by stepping backwards on the board, the sharper your turning can be on your board. However, a sharper turn makes it more difficult to keep the balance. So, take it easy at the beginning! A wide, sweeping paddle stroke on the opposite side to the direction of your turn and shifting your weight in the direction of the intended turn will make your board turn practically on the spot.
Step 3
If possible, you should choose a spot without waves for your first attempts, as even smaller waves require more feeling for your board. Paddling in bigger waves is better left as a challenge for a later stage.
Step 4
When the rotation in the desired direction is achieved, step back to the initial position in the middle of the board. Stand securly and accelerate forward again with steady strokes of the paddle.
You haven't lost your balance and would like to try it out in bigger waves? Then let's go! From here you can continue with the next exercise: riding the waves. The best thing to do first is to find a spot with small waves and little current. It should not be overcrowded and there should not be large rocks under water - please also be careful not to paddle in nature reserves! If the water has no standing depth and you should put on a life jacket.
