Meanwhile you should have gained some experience on the board in calm waters. You know how to stand securely on the board and how to turn in different directions. These are the most important basics that allow you to enjoy surfing with the paddle in the waves. You will need them at all spots, whether with or without waves. However, every spot will be different, which makes SUP as a sport so varied and keeps it always exciting. So, let's talk about waves:
Step 1
If you want to ride a wave, everything becomes much easier at once if you move your feet more into the "surfing position", which means you position them slightly diagonally on the board and bend your knees a bit to help you keep your balance more easily.
Step 2
With powerful and fast paddle strokes you accelerate shortly before the wave catches up with you in order to position yourself correctly in front of the wave, the swell, and also because speed just makes surfing down the wave more fun.
Step 3
As soon as you feel that the wave pushing and lifting your board, you shift the balance or even your standing position a little backwards. This raises the nose of the board and prevents if from piercing in the wave trough, which may result in an aprupt end of your ride. In addition, the board becomes more manoeuvrable due to the weight shift, quite the same as when turning with your board. Now you can lean into the turn with feeling and ride the wave.
Step 4
It worked? Congratulations! Once on a wave, you're a surfer for life. It is important to say, however, that due to the higher speed on the wave, you must pay particular attention that the spot is not too crowded during your first attempts. Make sure nobody can get in your way and you do not endanger anyone either. Especially swimmers and divers are not easy to see in the waves. Take care to keep a little distance from the beach and watch out for sandbanks and large rocks beneath the water to keep yourself and your material safe.
