The moment the sun comes out, we want to get back on the water. And with a wide range of possibilities for paddling, there are many reasons to get out and paddle in nearby waters. In addition to the SUP trend, it's also worthwhile to rediscover paddling in boats.
Together with Lars Thierling from “Paddeln macht Spaß” (Paddling is Fun), we have compiled five good reasons why you should get back on a SUP or in a paddle boat. Here they are:
Reason 1: Enjoy special moments while paddling
Whether alone or in a small group, a SUP or paddle boat gives you the personal freedom to plan and soak up the uniqueness of nature. Through canals, along the promenade or in calm waters passing by picturesque landscapes – you alone choose your panorama and can enjoy your surroundings free from pedestrians, cyclers and car traffic.
Reason 2: Time-out for yourself and your loved ones
Hardly any other watersport allows you to be alone and let your thoughts wander. Whether in a kayak or on a SUP: if you need time for yourself, you can just take it and paddle away. If you like to enjoy time with your family and away from the daily hustle, you can relax in a canoe and finally take time to listen to the stories of your beloved ones.
Reason 3: Close to home but still far away
There are countless waters close to home for doing paddling and SUP and getting your gear there is easy. With the right equipment, you can explore domestic lakes and rivers and discover new landscapes from the water. Paddling is good for everyone and you don’t need a special vehicle or roof rack. Even if you don't have a car, there’s a range of inflatable equipment for SUP and practical folding kayaks.
A few more tips from the pros:
1. Pay attention
Paddling is not allowed in every lake. Inform yourself before your paddling tour. Associations and regional watersports schools know where paddling is allowed or not.
2. Safety first
Inexperienced paddlers should definitely take a beginner's course and learn the basic rules of paddling before starting their first tour. Even those who are more experienced should wear protective gear such as life jackets.
3. Respect your surrounding
On every paddling tour, pay attention to your ecological footprint and avoid unnecessary pollution and damage to the environment.
Reason 4: Endurance and exercise in a relaxed atmosphere
Just get out there and get moving! When the weather is good, a bit of relaxation is fine but we also want to get some exercise. Sunny days are an invitation to get active. Both on the SUP and in the kayak, people of all ages can get an allround physical workout. Paddling trains the deep muscles without too much exertion and improves the body's own balance.
Reason 5: Make new friends and still keep your distance
If you don't like paddling alone and are looking for new paddling friends, you will quickly find like-minded people here. Whether SUP or canoe enthusiast – anyone who paddles can also do it with others. In many regions you can find private Facebook groups that you can join to paddle with. And the best thing is, you don't have to choose between SUP and canoe – just go paddling together! With a paddle-length between you, one of the general safety measures in this sport, you will always be adequately protected – even in the current situation.
