Pike fishing in spring - challenge for the start of the season
Spring pike fishing
Challenge for the start of the season
There are many reasons to seek the challenge of pike fishing at the start of the season. Fishing for master Esox at this time is a real adventure because of the exciting drill. This is because after their spawning season (closed season) over winter, the predators are particularly hungry in spring. Then they prove their strength and aggressiveness in their hunt for prey. This is especially evident in the impacts on the rod when the fish bites.
Aggressive predator Once you have managed to land the fish, you can admire the particularly beautiful golden-green coloring of the pike on the first warm sunny days of the year. Before that, however, you have to master the ever-quick escapes during the drill. The chances of catching many pike are good in the spring. But without the knowledge of how to catch them and where to find them, the fishing day quickly becomes a tailor's day. Here are tips & tricks for good catches to start the season:
The tackle - rod, reel & line For pike fishing in the spring suitable short rods are up to 2.40 m in length with a cast weight of 20 to 80 gr. Whether tighter or softer is a matter of taste. As a reel, a baitcast multi reel is recommended. In contrast to stationary reels, the Baitcaster has a better handling with some practice. Thus, the targeted casts to hotspots work out. This is due to the direct line guidance of the reels and the directly accessible spool.
Controlled stopping of the line The bail of stationary reels is a hindrance to precise casting. Unlike the Baitcaster, where the stopping of the line can be precisely controlled, the stationary reel only allows an immediate stop. A braided 0.18 mm line should be the minimum for pike fishing. Braided line has up to five times the load-bearing capacity of a monofilament line of the same diameter and does not stretch, which ensures a better bite detection. With the thickness of the line you are on the safe side even with strong bites. Nevertheless, the line remains inconspicuous in the water. A steel leader at the end of the line is a really a necessity for pike fishing!
Waters & Locations Never fish too deep: The first weeks the pike still remains in its spawning area. Therefore you have good chances in 2 to 4 m deep water. you therefore have good chancesIn 2 to 4 m deep water . If there are no bites, you can work your way further into shallower areas. Due to the first stronger rays of sunshine after winter, it is getting warmer again, especially in the shallower parts of lakes and rivers. In and around weed fields life awakes anew. If bites still fail to appear, you can try deeper water if necessary. An echo sounder is very helpful to locate the fish.
Greedy for prey After the spawning season, pike show no shyness even in clear water. They are greedy for prey. Flashy lures quickly catch their attention in this regard. So if you stand out from the crowd with lures in signal colors, you'll catch more fish! Don't be afraid to start with smaller baits. Pike often specialize in dainty prey in the spring. If the pike you cast to don't respond, larger baits can then be offered. Patience pays off if fish contact is still lacking on the first few attempts!
Understanding behavior It is good to be able to imitate the natural prey of the pike via the rod. Slow and slightly uncontrolled movements of the bait make a special impression on Esox. If you spot larger schools of small fish in the water, the predators are also not far away. The fact that pike are cannibals is well known among anglers. Pike, which just scared whitefish, do not leave competition from smaller conspecifics. So feel free to take a lure in pike design to the water.
Top baits for pike fishing Shallow running plugs in the style of crankbaits and twitchbaits are very good as spring baits for pike. With spinners and spinnerbaits you generally have good catchability. A spinner blade creates a lot of vibration in the water. This guarantees attention especially with pike. A piece of fur or feathers on the hook of the bait makes it look bigger and increases the vibration effect once again. The ideal area of application for the spinnerbait are weed fields. Also jerkbaits are especially interesting for pike. Gliders create a zigzag, diver a sawtooth pattern, which is a treat for the pike.
Successful fishing day All in all, spring is a great time of year to fish for pike. Finally standing outside in a t-shirt again, chasing the pike and enjoying lots of aggressive bites! I, for example, had one of my best experiences on pike in the spring of 2012, together with a friend who had never caught a pike before. After a long search for a date, we had found a day when we both had time. Once at the water, I recommended a bucktail spinner to him. We started trolling along the weeds and after just three minutes of rowing he yelled "Fish!". The pike wasn't particularly big, but it was well-fed for the time of year, so I was able to lift it into the boat after a quick drill. My fellow angler was beside himself and thought he was "rieeeeeeeesig". The measurement showed 61 cm - not bad at all for his very first pike! Another pike was not caught that day. Nevertheless, my buddy was overjoyed and in the meantime he has caught a few more pike. Petri Heil, Jan Peter Ottlik.
