This is on! The skimboard is a must-have this summer if you are near water.
What is skimboarding?
Skimboarding or skimming is about sliding on a thin film of water standing on a board, using the effect of aquaplaning. Distinctions are made between waveskim (riding on waves), jumpskim (jumping off waves) and flatlandskim (skimming in shallow waters using ramps).
Where can you skim?
Wherever there is water! At beaches, on rivers, quarry ponds or on the ocean. In principle, a large puddle will do as long as there’s a sufficiently large contact area. The ideal water depth is anywhere from just a few millimetres to 10 centimetres, as the aquaplaning effect doesn’t last long enough in deeper water. Skimboards are small and handy and can therefore be taken everywhere.
Where are the skimboard hotspots in Germany and Europe?
Of course you can find wonderful spots for skimming everywhere along the North and Baltic Sea coastlines. You can also skim on any shallow lakes and rivers with banks that aren’t too overgrown.
But our top recommendations are:
Düsseldorf. Every year, there is a skimboard track at the boot Düsseldorf trade fair, where professionals present their stunts and beginners can try out the gliding fun.
Warnemünde and Wustrow. Both skimboarding and waveskim are popular here. There’s also lots of colourful beach life.
Kägsdorf in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The secret meeting place of the community. Here you can test your skills with flying colours in the skimboard contest at the zuparken Festival.
Lake Neustadt in the interior of Schleswig-Holstein. Here you will find finest sandy beaches and a long shallow water zone with excellent wind cover.
Knokke Heist in Belgium is known as "Surfers Paradise". On the northern lakeside promenade of the district of Het Zoute, any kind of mobility on the waves is possible - including skimboarding.
France. The town of Seignosse on the Atlantic coast is considered, along with Biarritz and Hossegor, to be the cradle of surfing. A real paradise also for skimboarders.
Watersports and beach fun are the top priorities in Cadzand Bad in the Netherlands. You can really let off steam with your skimboard on the kilometres of sandy beach.
The Costa da Caparica in Portugal is a dream for all skimmers. Close to Lisbon, the long, flat sandy beach offers the best conditions for sand skimming and wave skimming.
