Great racing & a great festival despite challenging weather conditions
The Travemünder Woche 2017 was packed with action! Storm, pouring rain and even heavy thunderstorms, but also repeated breaks with great sunshine and near perfect sailing conditions. The team of dedicated race officers defied the ever changing weather conditions not least with the support of weather analyts Meeno Schrader, who provided an expert on-scene weather service powered by boot Düsseldorf, the long-standing partner of Travemünder Woche. Thus, the 1500 sailors from 20 different nations were able to compete in 380 races sailed,679 boats crossed the start lines in the junior boat classes.
The 128th Travemünder Woche took off with a highlight: the 36 clubs of the 1st and 2nd German Sailing Bundesliga managed to complete 93 of their 96 scheduled races. And it was really tight racing as victory was decided only in the final race on Sunday afternoon: The German Touring Yacht Club (DTYC), reigning German champion, finally made it to the top of the podium in Travemünde. In the 2nd League, Seglervereinigung Itzehoe claimed overall victory. The further course of Travemünder Woche 2017 saw the complete programme of races on the offshore courses. Only in the Trias class the final race on Tuesday had to be cancelled due to weather conditions and the J/22s also skipped one race. The Joined German Youth and Children's Championships of all official junior boat classes, which was held as part of Travemünder Woche this year, brought 900 young sailors to the event. While the pirate class decided to cancell racing on the final day due to strong winds, the Optimist class set up an additional team race instead on short notice. All in all, sailors at Travemünde logged an impressive distance of over 50.000 nautical miles sailed in the races at Travemünder Woche 2017!
Sabine and her husband at the "Klönschnack" onboard the "Passat"
It was a big surprise and a great pleasure for Sabine, the winner of the boot.club-competition, as she was presented with a special VIP visit to Travemünder Woche 2017 by boot Düsseldorf! Sabine and her husband were invited by the boot Düsseldorf team to spend a very special weekend at the event. And it was a great experience, she told us:
"It is hard to pin down what impressed me and my husband most. It was simply great alltogether. The wonderful Arosa hotel with its countless possibilities to chill out and relaxl, be it the delicious breakfast or a visit to the spa area. Travemünder Woche itself with its festival area & food court also appealed to us very much and was really diverse. We spent the Friday evening dancing in the music zones on the beach to get into the mood for the Saturday evening! And this Saturday evening at the "Klönschnack" on the tall ship PASSAT was sensational! Starting off with a warm welcome, interesting guests and talks and a Caribbean buffet with delicious cocktails. Everything really fantastic! We enjoyed every minute on board and felt very comfortable! We will remember this great weekend for a long time! We are already looking forward to the boat show in Düsseldorf in January 2018 - and we will be a part of it, again!"
The festival & a preview of 2018
On shore, as on the race courses on the water, the organizers of Travemünder Woche had no easy job on hand at all due to the weather. Following the nice opening day, Alfred, the low pressure area comming in from the north west, was responsible for rain and stormy winds as well as a flood warning. Nevertheless, a total of nearly 700,000 visitors would not miss the programme crammed with concerts, colorful events and various activitie, as well as the "Trave Show Races" just off the festival mile and the live broadcasts of the racing action on the big screen on the beach.
A preview of Travemünder Woche 2018 A detailed preview of the next Travemünder Woche in 2018 will be presented in style at the traditional Tavemünder Woche reception at the boot Düsseldorf from January 20th to 28th, 2018. What is already clear, however, is that quite a few different boat classes will start at the Travemünder Woche 2018. "All classes who had to forgo Travemünder Woche this year because of the German Youth Championships being sailed here have already indicated that they want to come back in 2018," said the sporting director of Travemünder Woche, Jens Kath. Several Skiff classes have already expressed their interest, and also the catamaran classes are set to return to the TW race courses.
For next years races around 25 to 30 boat classes are expected. The Laser youth classes plan to race their German championships in the Bay of Lübeck, as they have been doing since 2014. International flair will be provided by the Flying Junior and the Vaurien classes, who will stage their European and World Championships at Travemünde. Talks about another world championship in another youth class and international title competition in a keelboat class are already under way. In addition, the Travemünder Woche is upholding its application for the German Offshore Sailing Championships.
