Taking advantage of special conditions Every few years, special conditions arise on our waters. Especially at rivers, the adjacent harbors and groundwater-fed lakes there are strong water level fluctuations at regular intervals. In the following I would like to show you special places, which are worthwhile to be looked at exactly at low water:
Stone packs At low water, you can get an accurate picture of where to throw your bait later and at what point you need to crank it in quickly to avoid getting hung up in the future. Look closely at the stone packs: How far do they go into the river? How does the water swirl back? This knowledge will save you money in the future.
Outlets Fish love such locations. They usually stand in quiet places behind the stone wall and wait for passing prey. Runs are gathering places of many small fish. Thus the hunter is not far away. So look closely: How do the outlets end under water? What is the exact course of the outflowing water? What is directly in front of the outlet? Most of the outlets are very well known and popular fishing spots, but there are many that flow underground into the water. Such an outlet is usually hardly known or not known at all. A guarantee for regular catches!
Groynes Who does not know it? Sometimes there is no bite for more than 15 groynes and then one bite follows the other. And that, although the groynes all seem to look the same. The peculiarities within the groynes, which are of interest for the fish, have to be discovered at low water. If there is still a lot of water in a groyne despite low water, this indicates a particularly deep spot, which is often full of fish. Maybe there is just another water bottom. Here it is necessary to look carefully.
Hanger Low water levels quickly explain annoying incidents from the past. Maybe even bait lost on previous fishing trips can be found again. Note such places in the water exactly for coming trips to the fishing spot. This may save you money and trouble.
Shellfish beds A mussel bank is an absolute hotspot. In a river, the site-faithful fish doesn't have many opportunities to feed, its prey either swims past it or it has a feeding spot: the mussel bank. It's teeming with food. If you can pinpoint the course of such mussel beds, you will be more successful on the water in the future.
Gathering information It is important to have a camera and a notepad with you on this exploration tour. Once you find a suitable spot to fish, take pictures and write a short note about that spot. Use surrounding trees, signs or houses as markers to find the exact spot later.
