At the FLAGSHIP NIGHT at boot 2020 the eighth SEAMASTER-Award was presented to Boris Herrmann. With this award boot Düsseldorf and the Delius Klasing Verlag honour a personality who sets special accents in water sports.
Last summer, he made worldwide headlines with a transatlantic cruise, taking Greta Thunberg to the UN climate summit in New York with zero emissions. 800 million people watched the arrival of Greta Thunberg on television and via live streams on the Internet. Never before has a sailing event reached more people. Boris Herrmann was thus the most important ambassador for water sports last year.
The currently most successful German sailing sportsman wants to cause a sensation again in 2020. On November 8th, Boris Herrmann will be the first German to take part in the prestigious Vendée Globe - a non-stop regatta for one-handed sailors - with the yacht "Malizia II".
With Greta Thunberg, Boris Herrmann has achieved an unbelievably broad impact worldwide, according to Konrad Delius (publisher Delius Klasing) and Petros Michelidakis (Director boot Düsseldorf) on the decision of the jury. Through him and Greta, watersports, especially sailing, have been perceived as absolutely sustainable, young and en vogue - despite all prophecies of doom. Boris Herrmann was thus the most important ambassador for water sports last year.
The laudatory speech was held by Dee Caffari, who for her part is one of the top professionals in the offshore sailing scene. In 2006, she became the first woman in the world to succeed in a solo non-stop circumnavigation of the world against the prevailing wind direction, i.e. from east to west, around all the stormy capes of the southern hemisphere. Since then, she has had three more projects, all of which she has successfully completed: once one-handed at the Vendée Globe, twice with crew at the Volvo Ocean Race.
For her outstanding achievements in water sports, sailing legend Loïck Peyron, America's Cup skipper Jimmy Spithill, the lawyer of the seas "Emily Penn" and in 2019 the two-time World Sailor of the Year, Carolijn Brouwer, have already received the SEAMASTER Award. The award was presented during FLAGSHIP NIGHT, the maritime gala at the opening weekend of boot Düsseldorf 2020.
