CITIZEN SCIENCE: How the Clipper Race is helping our Ocean Health

The Clipper 2019-20 Race has been engaging in citizen-science research efforts, collecting ocean and weather data which is being utilised around the world. The project aims to monitor climate change and the impact it is having on the ocean.

Regularly racing through some of the most remote places on the planet, the Clipper Race is uniquely positioned to be able to collect data that would otherwise be difficult to access. In Cape Town, race organisers collaborated with a team of experts to enable the deployment of drifter buoys on the Southern Ocean Leg from Cape Town to Fremantle.

Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) drifter buoys were put aboard four Clipper Race yachts and successfully deployed on Leg 3 by Unicef, Seattle, WTC Logistics and GoToBermuda during the Southern Ocean crossing. They had been donated to the South African Weather Service by NOAA (The United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), who the Clipper Race had previously worked with on the Ocean Acidification Programme during the 2017-18 edition.

A further four buoys were deployed during the Australian Coast-to-Coast Leg, from Ha Long Bay, Viet Nam, Seattle, Zhuhai, Qingdao, as the teams raced from Fremantle to The Whitsundays. In addition to the drifter deployments, two of the yachts have been provided with training on a Voluntary Observing Ship Scheme (VOS) in Fremantle. The first two teams to participate in the trial were Seattle and Zhuhai, with the training delivered by Ian Charlesworth from the Australian Meteorological Agency (BOM). The teams have been reporting observations of barometer readings, visibility, cloud formation and sea state every 12 hours.

Clipper Race Commercial Director Alex Smith and Toste Tanhua, Chief Scientist and Chair of UNESCO-IOC/WMO will be discussing the project in detail on Monday 20 January – 11:30- 11:45 on the Sailing Stage in Hall 15 in a talk called CITIZEN SCIENCE: The Clipper Race and ocean health.

MEDIA: Further information, imagery and interview opportunities available – please email pressenquiries@clipper-ventures.com to secure an interview with Alex Smith.

It is the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of eleven identical 70-foot ocean racing yachts, each with a fully qualified skipper and first mate to safely guide the crew on a record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world.

Divided into eight stages and between 13 and 16 individual races, participants choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select individual legs.

Normally the domain of seasoned pros, this supreme challenge is raced by people from all walks of life and more than 40 nations. Having completed a rigorous training course, participants are provided with latest extreme protection gear to commence the race of their lives - an unparalleled challenge.

The sea does not distinguish between Olympians or novices. There is nowhere to hide - if Mother Nature throws down the gauntlet, you must be ready to face the same challenges as the pro racer. Navigate the Doldrums en route to South America, endure epic Southern Ocean storms, experience South African sunsets, face the mountainous seas of the North Pacific - and bond with an international crew creating lifelong memories before returning victorious.

The brainchild of sailing legand, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the event is now in its twelfth edition. The Clipper 2019-20 Race started from London in September 2019 and returns eleven months later, in August 2020.

Applications are now open for the 2021-22 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Seize the moment, unleash the adventure.
