Consultancy and expertise in France and abroad

Transmanche has been providing consulting services and expert appraisals for the development of inland waterways and their uses since 1993. The qualifications of the founder, his team of collaborators and external partners mean that the company can undertake multidisciplinary studies covering either complete waterway networks (e.g. the Canal des Deux Mers, the rivers Lot and Baïse, the cross-border Franco-Belgian waterway network, the Rhône-Saône basin) or specific waterway sites such as boat harbours or urban sites enhanced by inland waterways.

The company being located in South-East France, most consulting assignments are conducted within the 8500km French waterway network, but the expert David Edwards-May and his team also work throughout Europe on Interreg or other EU-funded projects on inland waterways.

The company is currently seeking to expand its network of experts/partners in order to improve the supply of information in other parts of the world. The choice – unusual for a commercial company – to develop its activity in this single field is motivated by our conviction that sustainable development imposes the maximum use of inland navigation, the most environment-friendly transport mode, not only on rivers that are navigable in their natural state, but also on canalised rivers and the canals that link them, to form integrated networks.

Overview maps of inland waterways

On the 2020 Inland Waterways Pavilion, Transmanche Publications joins forces with the web portal French-Waterways.com. The stand promotes the inland waterways of France, while Transmanche offers for sale its widely-acclaimed maps of the inland waterways of Europe and North America. David Edwards-May, president of IWI and author of these publications, as well as Imray's Inland Waterways of France (guide and map) will also be available to give tips and advice on navigating the French (and European) waterways in 2020 and the years ahead. IWI membership may also be acquired on this stand.
french-waterways.com is the world’s most comprehensive and best-loved source of inspiration and information about enjoying the rivers and canals of France – on the water or by the water, in one’s own craft, in a self-drive hire boat, on a luxury hotel barge charter or on a large cruise-line riverboat.french-waterways.com is the world’s most comprehensive and best-loved source of inspiration and information about enjoying the rivers and canals of France – on the water or by the water, in one’s own craft, in a self-drive hire boat, on a luxury hotel barge charter or on a large cruise-line riverboat.
French Waterways is founded on a passion for inland waterways cruising; many years of hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge has built a thriving business, supported by an expert and creative team. The advice and guidance is second to none and understanding the potential for enjoying holidays afloat is what individuals, couples, families and larger groups really need and value. 400 web pages are divided into four major sections:
SELF-DRIVE HIRE-BOATS for those wanting an adventure without the bother of owning a boat themselves. A week’s sunshine holiday afloat in high-quality boats to suit those from San Francisco to Sydney, from Hong-Kong to Hanover.
HOTEL BARGES offer sedate luxury cruising with a crew. From 3 star to 6 star, the barges are all individually styled and offer bespoke charter cruising as well as book-by-cabin hotel cruising. This is perhaps a once in a life-time experience, savouring the very best of wines and cuisines that France has to offer.
RIVER CRUISE BOATS are limited by their size to the major rivers of France and provide a luxury cruise aboard for larger groups and individuals. They offer the benefits of on-board entertainment and the grander vistas across wide rivers and cityscapes.
HANDS-ON discovery for those in their own boat; a chance to set sail and navigate the waterways using expert commentary and maps, with details of water depths, widths, heights and many other good-to-know features.
All the details a visitor needs about cruising in France is delivered via the website, via email and social media, along with free downloads, books, guides, charts and maps to audiences across the world.
French Waterways partners with major self-drive hire-boat companies, hotel barge owners and operators, and river cruise-line operators, to whom it refers hundreds of paying customers every year. For those wishing to purchase a holiday afloat it offers the benefit of extensive partnerships with the very best fleets, individual owners and operators, and the specialist services of cruise agents across the world.

About us

Company details

Founded in 1993* by waterways specialist David Edwards-May, Euromapping has become, in 18 years, one of the leading European consultancies in its field.
The company has also established a worldwide reputation as publisher of high-quality planning maps and works of reference, which may be purchased on this site. The 3rd edition of the European Waterways Map and Directory was elaborated with cartographers Maud Gaudin (seen here on assignment at Braunston, UK), and Sylvain Blanchard (here on assignment in Tournus).
Aware of the rapidly evolving requirements of clients, from large public organisations to members of the general public interested in waterways and the potential they offer for many activities, Euromapping continues to develop the sister site worldcanals.com as a compact, bilingual information portal.
Studies and expert appraisals led by David Edwards-May, expert in this field for 27 years, contribute to enhancement of the various functions of inland waterways: transport, tourism, recreation and urban regeneration.
Restoration of the river Lot navigation, listing of the Canal du Midi as a UNESCO World Heritage site, restoration of the Canal de Roubaix (bluelinks2008.org) and organisation of the World Canals Conference in Serbia in 2009 owe a lot to the work conducted over the years by this ‘pole of excellence’.
The company makes this experience and know-how available to clients and consulting groups for development projects on or around inland waterways and their heritage sites.
The company’s international reputation is attested by the role of technical coordinator awarded to its expert for various EU programmes (such as ‘Voies d’eau vivantes’ (VEV), which brought together 11 partners from five countries (‘Terra’ programme conducted between 1998 and 2002), and Blue Links.
