Sport coaster licence (SKS)

SKS training trips

The Sport Coastal Boat Licence (SKS) is the official driving licence for driving yachts with a propulsion engine and under sail in coastal waters (all seas up to 12 nautical miles from the mainland coast). It is required for the navigation of commercially used sports boats in coastal waters.

If you plan to charter a yacht someday, the SKS is a prerequisite.

We offer sailing in the most beautiful areas of the world on our own yachts. Trips in the Mediterranean, the Canaries and the Caribbean are on the program! We combine the visit of varied cultural sites with sporty sailing, go swimming in paradisiacal bays, snorkelling and enjoy the sunny weather. The Atlantic Crossing West-East

Caribbean (Sint Maarten) - Azores (Horta/Faial) approx. 2400 nm

Duration: 24 days
Type of cruise: Ocean cruise

The cruise starts in Simpson Bay Marina in the lagoon of the Dutch part, not far from the airport. After everyone has moved into their bunks, we go to a nice restaurant nearby at the harbour and enjoy a nice Caribbean dinner. The following 2 days are spent preparing for the trip and shopping for provisions. After a detailed ship and safety briefing, a first beat leads us to sail in to the neighbouring island of Anguilla, where we once again enjoy Caribbean flair, white beaches, turquoise water and a last meal ashore.

Farewell to the Caribbean
The next morning we set off. As the trade wind blows more easterly here, we first sail a northerly course on the wind towards Bermuda. Although we take a "detour" here, it is usually quicker to reach our destination. Here the current and wind are more favourable than on a course directly to the Azores. In doing so, we would pass through calm areas for a longer time. The so-called horse latitudes. As soon as we reach the west wind drift after about 800 nm, we steer a more easterly course towards the Azores.

As the winds are more changeable on this route than on the east-west Atlantic crossing, you also sail more often with situation. Also the wind speed and the waves can be much higher. This trip is considered the more demanding in terms of sailing. After a few days, the on-board routine has settled in and everyone has found their rhythm during the night watches. We cast the trolling line and enrich the galley with fresh fish, we see magnificent starry skies and watch how dolphins accompany our ship. After about three weeks we reach the first islands of the Azores.

"Only he who sees the Azores from the deck of a yacht realizes the beauty of this picture in the middle of the ocean," wrote Joshua Slocum at the end of his single-handed Atlantic crossing when he made landfall in Faial on July 20, 1895. One can only agree.....

Landfall in the Azores
The islands are considered to be the best-kept sailing secret in Europe and enchant with their pleasant climate, calm bays, clear water and beautiful landscapes. Well protected harbours and the legendary friendliness of the inhabitants, towards the yachting scene, make the stay so pleasant. We want to follow Joshua Slocum's example and also experience our landfall in Faial. A highlight of any sailor's career is definitely a visit to the legendary Peter Cafe Sport in Horta, which has been a meeting place for the blue water scene for many decades. We finish our crossing with a delicious meal in the restaurant of the circumnavigator Genuíno. Especially the Atlantic crossing from west to east will never be forgotten by any of the sailors.

About us

Company portrait

Our philosophy is to sail in the most beautiful sailing areas of the world and to enjoy the culinary delights. We combine visits to diverse cultural sites with sporty sailing, go swimming and snorkelling in paradisiacal bays and enjoy the sunny weather. Very important to us is also a close and friendly contact with our fellow sailors during the trips and afterwards.

Why barefoot?
The name Barefoot Sailing Tours originates from the term "barefoot route". This describes a circumnavigation of the globe in the trade wind regions. These are located in the tropics or subtropics. There it is correspondingly warm and the sweating sailor likes to get rid of his footwear.
We also like to sail in warm regions and so the idea for the name Barfuss Segelreisen was born.

We are sailing with two yachts on different routes and love to spend the night in bays. Since we have equipped our ships above average and for long distance cruising, we can enjoy anchoring independently from marinas. Although the ships are certified for more people, we take a maximum of six guests. Furthermore, both ships feature a spacious cockpit, a generous salon and a nice kitchenette. There is enough privacy on board, as each cabin has its own bathroom and toilet.

We and our skippers are passionate about sailing and are looking forward to meeting you!
