Buying advice for a used boat

What should I consider when buying a used boat? This buying guide provides the answers to the most important questions about buying a boat.

Where can I find advice on buying a used boat?
If you want to be on the safe side, you should hire a surveyor. He has a neutral view of possible defects and, in case of doubt, more experience. The costs for a purchase appraisal depend on the size of the boat and the scope of the assignment. Qualified experts charge a daily rate of about 1000 euros, plus travel expenses. A visual inspection takes less time than a purchase appraisal and is therefore considerably cheaper. A visual inspection by an expert of the Association of Sports Boat and Shipbuilding Experts (VBS) is based on a checklist which records the condition for them. Experts are listed on the homepage of the VBS.

Damage assessments for boats and yachts

In the event of damage, it is advisable to call in an expert for a damage appraisal. The damage is not always as superficial as it looks at first glance. Often underlying areas of the boat or yacht are also affected or there are effects in completely different places that the non-expert does not consider.

It is often not possible to make a claim at a later date without a damage report, so it is advisable to subject the damage to a detailed examination in advance. Repair costs, replacement and loss of value are determined by the expert and established in a well-founded manner.

The damage appraisal must stand up to legal proceedings.

Appraisals for boats and yachts

Valuation reports for boats and yachts are often required by insurance companies to determine the hull insurance sum.

In order to determine the actual value of the boat, the purchase contract is often not sufficient. Many boats have a higher or perhaps a lower value than stated in the purchase contract or are no longer available on the market and therefore cannot be recovered.

The actual value should be determined by a specialist with an appraisal. He can usually also advise you on the necessary insurance conditions.
