Learn to sail

You would like to sail or drive a motorboat on all inland waters (rivers, lakes, canals)?
Then the sport boat licence with the scope of inland waterways is the right boat licence for you. This licence is the official driving licence which, in addition to the federal waterways, is also required as proof of competence on numerous state waterways and state waters. It can be acquired as a pure "sailing licence", as a "motor licence" or combined with a drive engine and under sail.

Would you like to sail a motorboat close to the coast?
Then the recreational boat license with the scope of maritime shipping routes is the right boat license. This is the official driving licence that is required on maritime shipping routes and up to three nautical miles from the coast in order to drive motorised pleasure craft with a useful power greater than 11.03 kW (15 hp). It is also recognised and required internationally by charter companies.

Would you like to sail in coastal waters or charter a sailing yacht?
Then the Sportküstenschifferschein (SKS) is the right boat licence for you. The SKS is the officially recognised driving licence for all coastal waters up to twelve nautical miles from the coast. It is also recognised internationally by charter companies and is valid as proof of competence for insurers. It is recommended to all water sports enthusiasts who want to leave the three nautical mile zone. The prerequisite is the possession of a sports boat licence with the area of validity "sea".

Children and youth sailing

Sailing is a wonderful sport that has something to offer for every age group and target group in its different variants (sailing, surfing, kiting) and through the variety of possibilities (leisure, recreational, cruising, regatta and competitive sailing).

The wide horizon over the open water, experiencing the forces of nature and exploring your own abilities and limits are important elements of the fascination of sailing. People have been competing in regattas for hundreds of years. Driven only by the wind, a wide variety of boat classes sail on the high seas, near the coast or on inland waters.

All you need to get started is an interest in movement in nature and the will to move with the power of the wind - and it can sometimes get quite wet.

Our exciting sport can be learned and practiced at almost any age. The sport of sailing trains all the essential qualities and skills that are popular today: Strength, calmness, balance, coordination, endurance, team spirit, enjoyment of competition, purposefulness and concentration. Sailing is a team sport, but can also be practiced as an individual sport. Different types of boats are used accordingly.

Throughout Germany, there are many clubs that offer introductory and beginner's courses for non-members as well, where you can learn how to handle a boat in a playful and direct way - you don't need your own boat or particularly expensive functional clothing.

And with a little diligence you can even get your first sailing license, the youth sailing license.

Who then wants to take the next steps, looks for a sailing club in the vicinity and can join one of the training groups there and may eventually become a circumnavigator, an Olympic champion or simply has great joy in sailing like many others.

About us

Company portrait

We introduce ourselves
The German Sailing Association (DSV), founded in 1888, is the federation of German sailing and surfing clubs, regional sailing associations and class associations, as well as other sailing organizations. As such, it promotes sailing on sea and inland waters, on land and on ice, for adults and young people, as a popular and regatta sport. The association takes measures for the use, the development and the protection of water surfaces and shore areas and it provides for consumer protection as well as a comprehensive representation of the sailing sport in the public.

The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has entrusted the DSV with the examination and issuing of spot boat licences and radio certificates.

The DSV represents the interests of its members at home and abroad as a top sports federation in the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), in the world sailing federation World Sailing (WS), in the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) and as an expert advisor to the state in the federal and state governments.
