MARCO MEHN ABOUT HIS CREATIVE PROCESS
Listening to the inner self is the most important thing for me in order to paint an expressive and soulful picture. And suddenly the idea is there.
HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FOLLOWING YOUR INSPIRATION?
After that the exact colour selection takes place. I prefer red pictures in combination with bright yellow-orange tones - that's just my taste! And I always try to give my works the expression of something special. I think it is the luminosity of my paintings that fascinates many viewers.
WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
With a great deal of patience I repeatedly apply different layers of paint on top of each other, whereby each individual layer of paint always requires at least 24 hours drying time. Although one cannot see with the naked eye how elaborate this technique is, in some paintings there are actually up to 16 layers, in which up to 40 different shades of red and 12 different shades of yellow and orange are used. I set accents, for example, with pastel chalk or silver leaf. How the individual accents are finally completed is something I have learned myself over the last few years. These techniques are my personal intellectual property and therefore a closely guarded secret! Finally, a special UV varnish is applied over the finished work to protect the images from UV rays.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SELF-IMAGE AS AN ARTIST?
There are many painters and artists all over the world, and I admire them very much myself, but each one has his own technique and his own little secrets, which sometimes only come about by chance or by "learning by doing". In my opinion the most important thing for an artist is to develop his own unique and recognizable style. I think I have succeeded in doing this over the many years of my work - not least through the invention of the SPACE FRAME in 2004.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE UNUSUAL CONSTRUCTION?
The Space Frame, which is patented at the patent office in Munich as an art carrier for planar structures, was born out of a year-long search for something new, something that had never been seen before in the art sector. I believe that only if an artist creates something during his lifetime that mankind has never seen before, is there a chance of achieving worldwide recognition for his works. And let's be honest: Every artist hopes for that a little bit! Since there are already many people who own works of mine and then tell me that they enjoy them every day, my dream has come true
